What is (PBS) Positive Behavior Support?

Well, in this case the letters PBS don't stand for that wonderful public television station. Instead, PBS is a very powerful, effective program that schools do to help students learn to become safe, respectful and responsible!

In the past, school-wide discipline has focused mainly on reacting to specific student misbehavior by using punishment-based strategies. Things like reprimands, loss of privileges, office referrals, suspensions and expulsions.

Research has shown that the use of punishment, especially when it is not consistent and in the absence of other positive strategies, is not effective.

Introducing, modeling, practicing and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important part of a student’s educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and reinforcing students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to happen before responding.

The purpose of school-wide PBS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm. One doesn't ignore inappropriate behavior - and yes, logical and natural consequences do have a place. But experience in many schools clearly shows that when all the adults at school consistently teach and reinforce clear behavior expectations - that's when powerful things really start to happen!

Scott Perry has been a school administrator for many years, including several years as an elementary school principal. Many of the songs on his CDs for children are written to help teach specific expectations for the behavior of children at school and can be very helpful for schools implementing PBS.

Many apply to the home as well. He writes about specific ways for children to demonstrate positive character traits such as kindness, courage, honesty and patience. He also has songs that teach specific school-related behaviors such as appropriate hallway, cafeteria, library and playground behaviors.

Scott's goal is to help schools and parents as they implement Positive Behavior Support practices by providing them with fun musical ways to help teach and reinforce healthy, positive behaviors.

Have fun with the music!
